A short story, ‘At the French Art Exhibition’
In this short story, written when Lois was 15, she recounts a visit to the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery to see an exhibition entitled ‘French Painting Today’ which toured Hobart and other state capitals in 1953. The collection featured 119 paintings and four tapestries by 81 different artists. It was widely considered the most significant international art event in Australia in the post-war period, introducing Australian audiences and artists to contemporary French styles, including surrealism and abstraction. The illustrations included in the story are from the exhibition catalogue.
